Guardian ad Litem Program

About the Organization:

The Guardian ad Litem Program advocates on behalf of abused, neglected and abandoned children whose cases are brought to the court’s attention. Under the guidance of staff, including attorneys, trained volunteers work within the judicial and child welfare systems to make sure children are safe, protected and given every opportunity for future success.

About the Internship Position:

Functional Work Area #1
Learn about the overall mission of the Guardian ad Litem Program and the opportunities, challenges that face the agency
Engage in volunteer recruitment and retention activities initiated by the both the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Program and local office that target private and public sector audiences
Strengthen existing marketing efforts by identifying new and creative strategies to promote the Program.

Functional Work Area #2
Involvement with the Program’s Volunteer Recruitment and Retention committees
Implement the marketing plan
Assist the Director in meetings and other promotional activities
Participate in speaking engagements and other activities designed to enhance public awareness and the recruitment of volunteers
Write press releases to be sent to various local media outlets.
Assist with the publication of the Program’s quarterly newsletter

Required Knowledge and Skills
Must be dependable, organized and enjoy interacting with both professional and lay people
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Skills
Proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, website utilization, use of electronic mail and simple newsletter design.
Background and basic understanding in the principles of marketing.
Understand the basic principal forces and dynamics that influence volunteer based organizations.

Student Learning Outcome Areas
Student will develop an awareness of the Guardian ad Litem Program and the Judicial and Child Welfare systems
Student will be exposed to various sources of data, including census data, used to guide volunteer recruitment and public relations efforts.
Student will acquire experience speaking in public and writing public service announcements and basic speeches.
